Hardwick 2018 / 2019

Welcome to Hardwick Class! We are a Year 3 / 4 mix, with Mrs.England as our teacher. Mrs.Theobald, Miss.Harvey and Miss.Gilpin support our class on different days of the week.

We have an exciting academic year ahead of us, where we will study a range of different topics, in addition to daily Maths, English, Reading and Spelling sessions. We have 2 PE sessions a week, as well as an RE session and a Science afternoon. Later in the academic year, we will go swimming at the Kingfisher and gymnastics at the Sudbury Gym Club.

Year 4 children have the opportunity to learn either the cello or violin, whilst Year 3 children have Music sessions with Miss.Dixey.

Easter Holiday Homework.

Please see the attached document as homework for Hardwick Class for the Easter holidays.

The content is identical to what the children received on the Friday although the images may be slightly different.

Happy holidays!!

Timetables

Please find attached a copy of our weekly timetable, for Autumn 1 half-term.

English

We will cover a number of different genres throughout the year, and the document below sets out which will be covered when. We have the exciting 'Take One Book' planned into our year, where a text is selected for us to study and enjoy.

Maths

Maths covers many different areas. The document below shows which we will cover when. We use materials from The White Rose Hub, Target Your Maths and NRich to provide a variety of interesting and challenging activities.

We will be working hard on learning our multiplication facts, as Year 4 children will soon have to complete an end of year test on their times table kowledge - this is being implemented by the Government, although this year is the pilot year.

Topic

Depending on the over-arching Topic, these sessions will be either History or Geography based, although some sessions will be a combination of the two!

We have some exciting Topics this academic year, which provide great opportunities to learn about different areas, as well as the chance for trips and visits to extend our knowledge and experiences further.

Our Topics;

Autumn 1- Out Of This World

Autumn 2 - Victorian Christmas

Spring term - Ancient Egypt

Summer 1 - Rainforest Rainbow

Summer 2 - Coastal Britain

PE

The expectation is for all children to access a minimum of 2 hours of PE a week. In Hardwick, this is achieved through a Games session with Mr.Gates and a second session with Mrs.England.

Autumn 1 - Tag Rugby and Cricket

Autumn 2 - Dance

Spring term - Swimming

Summer term - Gymnastics

Spring term

Ancient Egyptians!

We will be investigating the Ancient Egyptian way of life, their beliefs and inventions for all of the Spring term - there's so much to cover!

As part of this topic, we will be heading to the Ipswich Museum on Friday 25th January, taking part in the Egyptian Journeys workshop and activities.

Swimming

As part of our PE curriculum, Year 3 and Year 4s will access one swimming lesson a week, up to Easter.

Whilst swimming is fun, it is also a very important skill to have and we hope that our pupils enjoy their sessions, whilst building up their ability to swim confidently.

Maths and English

Our weekly Maths coverage has changed dramatically in LKS2, in that we are visiting a number of different areas of Maths each week. This is following recent studies indicating that longer blocks spent covering one area, isn't always the best way to learn.

We're all really excited by this and look forward to seeing the results from this new way of Maths learning!

Our English genres for this term link really well with our Ancient Egyptian topic. We will be studying recounts and newspaper articles, instruction texts and explanation texts. Towards the end of the term, playscripts will be our focus - perfect timing for the LKS2 play!
