Science at Tudor.

At Tudor Church of England Primary School, we recognise the importance of Science in every aspect of daily life. As one of the core subjects taught in Primary Schools, we give the teaching and learning of Science the distinction it requires. We are currently going through the process of attempting to gain our Quality Science Mark. 

Our Science Curriculum is based around increasing pupils’ knowledge and understanding of our world, and with developing skills associated with Science as a process of enquiry. We have 4 main learning drivers in science.

 Intent

We aim to develop the natural curiosity of our pupils, encourage respect for living organisms and the physical environment and provide opportunities for self-discovery and evaluation.

The National Curriculum will provide a structure and skill development for the Science curriculum being taught throughout the school, which is now linked, where possible to the theme topics to provide a creative scheme of work, which reflects a balanced programme of study. As well as the National Curriculum, we take inspiration from The White Rose Education's Science programme.

Implementation

We instil a secure knowledge of Science, vocabulary and scientific concepts throughout each year group and key stage. This can be seen on our 2 year rolling plan; cycle A and cycle B.

Children have weekly lessons in Science throughout Key Stage 1 and 2, using our own planned curriculum. Teachers utilise existing STEM and science specialist websites to resource sessions and to ensure the quality of teaching is to a high level. In Early years, Science is taught through the children learning about the world around them in their learning through play. 

Each term, our pupils will participate in scientific enquiries, using the TAPS working scientifically 'wheel' to aid the planning and implementation of these enquiries. In addition to this, each class will spend time 'meeting a Scientist' who is linked to the unit the children are currently studying. 

Impact

Our Science curriculum is designed to provide our pupils with a range of experiences and opportunities to explore scientific concepts in school, as well as their everyday lives and that they are equipped with the skills to question and investigate problems and interests which may arise.

By 'meeting a Scientist', whether through the STEM Ambassadors or in class with their peers, we hope that our pupils see the wide range of careers available under the STEM umbrella and that they consider a career within a STEM subject in their future.

 UKS2 classes studied the book 'Moth' in English in the Autumn term, when their Science unit was 'Evolution and inhertience'.  They completed some pieces of extended writing, which incorporated information learnt in Science sessions alongside reading the 'Moth' book.

LKS2 accessed a selection of texts which linked their Science unit and English sessions. Ranging from 'The Night Sky' (The Solar System) to 'The Wonder of Trees' (Biology, classification keys). LKS2 produced non-chronolgical reports and balanced arguments using facts from the texts.   KS1 classes used 'The Rainforest book' and 'Jack and the Beanstalk' as their texts in English whilst studying their biology units in Science (animals and their habitats and plants). The children in Felbrigg class have 'published' their own anthology of poems based on the animals in the rainforest.

EYFS have accessed a range of books this academic year which have linked to their learning goals, including texts which have covered climate change and pollution.
