Hatfield Class Page 2020 -2021

Welcome to Hatfield Class.  We are a Year Two class and we are taught by Mrs. Gray, Mrs. Mansfield and Miss. Woods.

Autumn Term 2

This term our topic is “Where in the world…..”  We are basing lots of our learning around the story Beegu by Alexis Deacon. In the story, a small alien finds herself lost on Planet Earth and is desperately looking for friends to keep her company while she waits for her parents to come and find her.  In English, we are using the story to write character descriptions of Beegu and the story setting.  We are creating and describing our own characters, and using these to write our own alien story.

We are taking the story of Beegu into our Geography learning, exploring the features of different locations that Beegu might visit while she is on Earth.  We are comparing our own locality with the city of London and the coastal town of Walton-on-the-Naze.  We are creating our own Beegu diaries, including the human and physical features of each of the different locations that Beegu might see while there.

While looking at the city of London, we have been exploring the story of Guy Fawkes in our History lessons. We were really enjoyed learning about this event and were very pleased to discover that Guy Fawkes failed to carry out his plan.  We have recognised the Houses of Parliament when we learnt about the city of London in our Geography lessons.

In Maths, we are learning to add two digit numbers. We are learning the value of different coins and adding them together to make different amounts. We are also learning about multiplication and will finish our term learning to identify and name 2D and 3D shapes.

In P.E. we are exploring the changing seasons through the medium of dance. We have been imagining that we are fireworks or that we are crunching through Autumn leaves. We are also listening to “T’was the night before Christmas” and putting our own movements to it.

In R.E. we are learning about “Why doing good deeds is important to Jewish people?”  We are finding out that Jewish families believe good deeds or mitzvot are a rule from God and it helps them to connect to Him.   We are learning that there are lots of different good deeds and that when we carry out a good deed, we make the world a better place.

Autumn 2

This half term our learning is based around the theme "Post a Penguin"   We will be using the story "Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers" as inspiration for many aspects of our learning, linking English, Geography, Science, Design and Technology to the story.

In English, we will be planning and writing our own lost and found story.  We will be reading and writing information texts about penguins and other polar animals.  We will also be writing animal poems.

In English, we will be reading stories based on toys and our writing will be focused on a toy theme.  The main texts that we will be reading are Traction Man by Mini Grey, The Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr and Dogger by Shirley Hughes.  In Year One, we will be focusing on listening for the sounds and writing them down to help us spell words.  In Year Two, we will also be focusing on our spelling and we will be learning about using capital letters and full stops to punctuate our sentences correctly.  We will also be learning to use adjectives to describe toys and objects.

In Maths, we will be learning about place value. In Year One, we will be reading, writing, ordering and counting numbers accurately to 20. In Year Two, we will extend this number up to 100 and we will be learning to partition numbers into tens and ones.   We will all be focusing on adding and subtracting and will finish our half term by learning the names of 2D and 3D shapes and using the correct language to describe them.

Our History lessons will focus on how toys have changed over time and we will be comparing present day toys with toys from the past.  This will include a trip to House on the Hill Toy Museum on 8th November. (More details to follow)

This is an exciting term for Year Two as we prepare for our final term together and make sure that we are ready for Year Three.

In English this half term, we are focusing all our learning around the book "The Day the Crayons Quit" by Drew Daywalt.  We have already noticed that the illustrations in this book have been done by one of our favourite authors and illustrators, Oliver Jeffers.  We are reading letters by the crayons and thinking about how we might reply to them.  We're also thinking about other stationary that we have in our classroom and the problems they might have.

In Maths, we are learning about 2D and 3D shapes.  We are also consolidating our learning on addition, subtraction, multiplication, divsion and fractions.

In the afternoons, we are continuing to learn about famous people in History. Last term we learnt about Amy Johnson and found her really inspriring,  This term we are learning about Florence Nightingale.

In Science, we are learning about the human body.  We will learning about the parts of the body, how we change and grow, and what we need to survive, thrive and be healthy.

We are also learning to be historians and are going to be investigating important events and people from the past.  In Art, we are learning about different European artists and exploring the techniques that they use.

We can't wait to share some of the things that we will be learning with you so please come back and visit the page to find out more about our learning.

Maths Art Day

We've had great fun exploring Maths through Art.  We looked carefully at pictures by Kandinsky, talking about the shapes and the lines that we could see.  We created some individual and group art inspired by Kandinksy.  What shapes can you see?

Art

In our Art lessons, we have been looking at the Matisse painting called "The Family"  We have explored warm and cold colours and talked about the colours we can see in Matisse's painting.  We worked together to re-create his painting as a large collage.
